What is a Legacy Footprint and why do we care? In my workshops when I ask the question how many of you like to control the decisions that you make and what happens to your property there is a unanimous response in the positive. Yet in spite of this desire, so many put off their plans, or make plans but fail to take the most important action which is having a conversation with their family about the plan, why it is important, how it represents the highest hopes and dreams and valuable lessons that have been learned over time. Without action, vision is a daydream and without vision action is a nightmare, doing nothing and going nowhere.
Imagine your family legacy as a footprint in the sand. For some of us we were fortunate and we were left a footprint by our past generations. A footprint on which we could step, grow and expand. For others, there was footprint. Our parents had very little. But even in that situation in permits us to create and forge a new footprint of our choosing. Either way the real question is what footprint are we going to leave. Will it be something strong, will it be something substantial, will it be something that will stand the test of time or will it be something that blows away like the sands of time. Will it something bigger, better, something greater than ourselves or will it be the same old tired messages, the same old tired thoughts, the same old tired beliefs.
The real question is what do you want your legacy to be and what role are you going to play in it. Are you going leave a legacy of wealth, not only in money, but also in values, beliefs and traditions. Are you going to leave a legacy of vision, purpose and stories that make up your life. What legacy will you leave to your children, grandchildren and beyond.
A legacy is links across time woven through the generations. And whether you think you like it or not you have a legacy. Because a legacy exists. It exists as a fact. And as a fact it is what makes you into the person you are. Your ancestors, your parents, all that you have experienced, all that you have done. It’s what has made you into the person you are so the only question is what kind of legacy will you leave.
A legacy is a journey that can start right now. With the right knowledge, the right skills and the right tools, we can realize how a good plan can fail, how a plan can succeed, how families can come together united in a common purpose and create a legacy that can last for generations.
